WBREDA operated three Biomass based Gasifier Power Plants at three different locations in Sundarbans of West Bengal for providing electricity to the villagers on regular basis. The biomass Gasifier power plant of capacity 500 kWe at Gosaba had been commissioned in the year 1996. The power plant served about 1250 numbers of consumers of different categories. Power supply maintained for 12 hours daily. The power plant was operated and managed by a society namely, Gosaba Rural Energy Development Co-operative Society Ltd. Due to extension of grid electricity in Gosaba area, the power plant project stopped in 2011.
The Gasifier Power `Plant of capacity 500 kWe at village Chottomollakhali under Gosaba Block operated during the period from 2001 to 2015. The power plant served about 380 beneficiaries of different categories. The power plant project stopped operation in the year 2015 due to extension of grid to Chottomollakhali village.
The Gasifier Power `Plant of capacity 200 kWe at Village Herambagopalpur under Patharpratima Block in the Distinct of South 24-Parganas was operational since March, 2006. The Power Plant served to about 49 numbers of beneficiaries through local LT distribution network. The power plant stopped operation in the year 2011 due to extension of grid at Herambagopalpu village.
In West Bengal nearly 69 MW of biomass (rice husk based) Power Plants had been installed under private ownership at different parts of West Bengal under Biomass Co-Generation Programme of MNRE, Government of India. Depending upon the capacity and process requirement, biomass is used to generate power through gasification route or direct combustion route.
