Frequently Asked Questions

What means solar electricity?

Electricity converted from sunlight is known as solar electricity. Solar technologies convert sunlight into electrical energy either through photovoltaic (PV) panels or through mirrors that concentrate solar radiation. This energy can be used to generate electricity or be stored in batteries or thermal storage.

What are 2 examples of solar energy?

The most commonly used solar technologies for homes and businesses are solar photovoltaic for electricity and solar water heating. Businesses and industry use solar technologies to diversify their energy sources, improve efficiency, and save money.

What are the benefits of solar power?

Each kilowatt-hour (kWh) of solar energy that is generated will substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions like CO2, as well as other dangerous pollutants such as, sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. Solar power also reduces water consumption.

Which solar type is best?

Monocrystalline panels have the highest efficiency rating of any type of solar panel, reaching over 20%; this means that these panels can convert 20% of sunlight into usable energy.

The most common types are:
  • Monocrystalline Solar Panels.
  • Polycrystalline Solar Panels.
  • Thin Film Solar Panels.
What is the main source of solar energy?

The sun.

Solar energy is created by nuclear fusion that takes place in the sun. Fusion occurs when protons of hydrogen atoms violently collide in the sun's core and fuse to create a helium atom. This process, known as a PP (proton-proton) chain reaction, emits an enormous amount of energy.

What are the advantages of solar energy?

Significantly reduces energy bills.

  • Cheap and easy to install (and getting cheaper all the time) ...
  • Low maintenance costs. ...
  • Reduce your impact on the environment. ...
  • Improves your energy security and independence. ...
  • It helps your green credentials and CSR. ...
How long do solar panels last?

25 to 30 years

The industry standard for most solar panels' lifespan is 25 to 30 years. Most reputable manufacturers offer production warranties for 25 years or more

What is solar energy and how does it work?

Solar energy is the energy derived from sunlight.

Solar panels are used to capture the energy created by the sun. This energy is then converted into electricity, which can power homes, businesses and more. Solar heating and cooling, also known as solar thermal, allows us to capture energy from the sun to heat and cool spaces.

Is Solar Energy Efficient?

Most modern solar panels process 15-22% of solar energy into usable power, depending on factors such as positioning, orientation and weather conditions. The efficiency of a solar panel to convert sunlight into energy is known as performance.

What is solar energy and why do we need it?

Solar energy is energy derived from sunlight.

The sun already powers our planet, providing the necessary energy to keep our environment and population growing. The amount of sunlight that reaches the earth's atmosphere is enough to power all of our needs.

Unlike conventional sources of fuel energy solar energy is endless. Its production cost is less than that of fuel energy. Since there is no question of carbon emission in this process, this is highly useful in view of global warming and pollution of environment

Do roofs leak from solar panels?

The answer is no.

Roof leaks for installation of solar panels are extremely rare.

Can rain destroy solar panels?

No. The rain itself will have no effect on the solar energy system. Solar panels are made of waterproof material, hence moisture cannot damage them.

Does having solar panels reduce my electric bill?

Yes, of course.
The biggest benefit of having solar panels installed is that you will save electricity costs. If your solar panels are large enough, you may be able to produce enough electricity for your whole home. Besides, surplus energy can be fed to the grid in on-grid system, the cost of which is deducted from your electric bill.

Is solar cheaper than electric?

Although solar energy requires an initial investment to purchase and set up, people find that solar energy is a lot less expensive than electric power in the long run due to the rising price of electricity.

Is 1 kW electricity enough to run a house?

A 1kW solar system can easily power a 2-3 BHK house wherein you can use one refrigerator, three fans, one TV, one laptop, and 4-5 lights. On an average, you can run about 800 W loads on a regular basis.

What is the scenario of Solar PV with battery backup?

WBREDA in recent past has installed solar PV power plant with battery backup at Primary Health Centres at different places of the Sundarbans. The demand for battery backup systems has been reduced in recent past due to penetration of grid connectivity with availability of quality power supply.
Cumulative Capacity here installed so far is 1.35 MW.

What about the Solar Thermal energy source?

Availing hot water from conventional electricity is a costly exercise. Water heating through solar thermal system is cheap, dependable and long lasting.

WBREDA in recent past has installed solar Water Heating System at Tribal Students’ Hostel at different places of the State; also installed community based solar cooking systems at schools, individuals premises etc.

Cumulative Capacity here installed so far is approximately 1,38,000.00 Litres Per Day(LPD).

What about the Utility Level PV Power Plant in ground mounted mode?

WBREDA in recent past has installed solar PV power plant of 10MW capacity in ground mounted mode at Bhajanghat in Nadia district. This plant is supplying electricity to the State Distribution Company, WBSEDCL. WBREDA is in the exercise of replication of the same at some other locations depending upon the availability of ground space @ 4 acres per MWp.

Where to contact in case of different renewable energy programmes at the entire district in West Bengal?
